I
love autumn’s smells, tastes and sights. And to me, no dish serves up the taste of the season more than a home-made apple pie. OK, Martha Stewart I am not. But as fall begins to arrive in all its colorful brilliance, my instincts kick in and there I am flinging flour and slicing apples. My lattice top may not be picture perfect or even close, but I give it my best shot in celebration of the season.
Ah, eating a warm piece of pie topped with vanilla ice cream, while watching leaves make their gentle last descent to the fading green grass below — for my family it’s as much a tradition as picking out a pumpkin and decking out the yard with spooky Halloween decorations.
Some families have as many fall traditions as they do for Christmas and other winter holidays. Whether it’s adding spooky touches to your home for a Halloween party, creating a leaf fort with the kids or gathering with family and friends for an OctoberFest, there seems no shortage of activities.
Some of the greatest parts of the season, however, are experienced through simple activities such as a walk or relaxing in the backyard. There’s just something magical about summer reaching out to you with one last kiss of warm afternoon sunshine before fall tightens a cool embrace with crisp evening winds — foreshadowing colder changes ahead.
So enjoy these final days of summer, and be sure to drop me a note at the address below to share your favorite harvest-time activities or fall recipes.
Sincerely,
