Sesame Street 40th Anniversary Highlights

Sesame Street 40th Anniversary Highlights(NAPS)-Many parents are pleased to be able to share a special part of learning and growing with their youngsters, including the experience of watching an educational TV show that's been providing new ways of seeing things for 40 years.

Preschoolers have been inspired to learn, grow and achieve their highest potential with help from "Sesame Street" for nearly two generations. Now, as the show celebrates its fourth decade, many are noting some of its most memorable milestones:

  • 1969 - "Sesame Street" premieres. That same year, James Earl Jones makes the first celebrity guest appearance on the show.
  • 1970 - Big Bird appears on the cover of Time and the show receives three Emmys®.
  • 1971 - Maria and Luis bring bilingual education to their Fix-It Shop.
  • 1977 - A Kermit the Frog balloon is added to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Also, "Sesame Street" travels to Hawaii to help children learn about and appreciate differences and diversity among people.
  • 1981 - School skills, such as taking turns and raising hands, are taught on the show. The role of the teacher and the structure of a school day are explained, as are such skills as listening and following directions.
  • 1984 - Elmo, a curious 3 1/2-year-old, and the always-worried Telly Monster join the cast.
  • 1986 - The program teaches children to count to 40. Kids learn about the concept of zero and about adding and subtracting numbers larger than 10.
  • 1991 - A Latina Muppet, Rosita, joins the cast.
  • 1994 - Then First Lady Hillary Clinton discusses healthy habits with Big Bird and Rosita.
  • 1999 - The program wins its 75th Emmy® award.
  • 2001 - Big Bird's nest is destroyed in a hurricane and children learn about coping with loss.
  • 2007 - One week after its launch, the "Sesame Street" podcast reaches No. 1 on iTunes' top podcast list.
  • 2009 - CGI animation is used for the first time on "Sesame Street" in the Abby's Flying Fairy School segment.

Families can now relive many of their favorite segments when "Sesame Street: 40 Years Of Sunny Days" debuts as a two-disc DVD set from Vivendi Entertainment and Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind "Sesame Street." Featuring nearly six hours of stories, songs, Muppets and celebrity segments including James Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson and Feist, the collectible set spans the renowned show's four decades, includes never-before-seen archival footage and a limited-edition, hardcover commemorative book. Deep Fried Turkey: A New Thanksgiving Favorite

Deep Fried Turkey: A New Thanksgiving Favorite (NAPS)-Home chefs everywhere are trying a new twist on a Thanksgiving favorite: deep-fried turkey. Mouthwateringly moist, deep-fried turkey will keep guests raving long after the last bite. Authentic turkey deep-frying starts with 100 percent peanut oil. With a high smoke point and a pleasing flavor, 100 percent peanut oil seals the juices inside the crispy, golden skin, which keeps the meat deliciously tender. In addition to great taste, research shows that peanut oil is as heart healthy as olive oil and can actually improve cholesterol levels. This method cuts cooking time in half, leaving your kitchen (and your evening) open for other things. Note that deep-frying should always be done outdoors, never indoors, under a covered patio or in the garage.

Try this recipe during the holidays, at a tailgate party or for your next family gathering:

Heavenly and Healthy Deep-Fried Turkey

  • 1 whole turkey
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons of your favorite dry rub
  • 3-5 gallons 100 percent peanut oil (just to cover the turkey)

Directions:

Wash bird inside and out and allow to drain. Rub turkey with the salt, pepper, garlic and dry rub. Allow to sit at room temperature for 1 hour or until completely thawed and dry. Preheat peanut oil outdoors in a turkey fryer or a very large stockpot to 350 degrees F. Make sure there is no moisture on the skin and carefully lower turkey into hot oil either in the fryer basket or using a sturdy tool inserted into the chest cavity. Submerge the turkey completely. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird. Internal temperature should reach 165 degrees. Remove turkey from the oil. Let sit 20 minutes before serving.

Makes 4 servings.
